Dr. Brant E. Fries

Dr. Brant E. Fries is a Professor of Health Management and Policy and Research Professor at the Institute of Gerontology at the University of Michigan.  He authored the Resource Utilization Groups (RUG-IV) system for classifying nursing home residents, used nationwide in the US and elsewhere to pay nursing homes and co-authored the US Nursing Home Resident Assessment Instrument.  A founder and President of interRAI, a 35-nation consortium of 100+ researchers interested in assessment and cross-national comparisons, he has co-authored assessment systems for aging persons, those with intellectual disability, and inpatient mental hospitals.  He has authored 32 books and 150 articles on long-term care and quantitative modeling of health care systems.
