    Karol Petrovska

    Director, Virtual Care, Strategic Reform and Planning Branch, NSW Ministry of Health

    Karol is the Director for Virtual Care at the NSW Ministry of Health. She is leading a new team to drive a more coordinated approach to embedding virtual care across the NSW health system. Over the past 18 months, Karol has led the development of the Virtual Care Strategy and Implementation Plan and has also led the establishment of the Virtual Care Taskforce, of which she is chair. Karol has a clinical background in occupational therapy and in recent years completed a doctorate in public health. She has spent most of the last 20 years in the Ministry, with brief stints at other government agencies, including the Department of Premier and Cabinet and the Department of Communities and Justice.

    Liz Hay is the Director of Economics and Analysis at the NSW Ministry of Health. Prior to that Liz was the Manager of Health Economics and Evaluation at the NSW Health Agency for Clinical Innovation and previously spent over 15 years working in inter-government relation teams. With nearly 30 years’ experience in health having worked in 2 jurisdictions and at local health district level, Liz has expertise in economics, evaluation, measurement health policy and reform, budgeting, commonwealth/state relations and value based health care.

    Liz currently oversees the measurement of multiple Value Based Health Care (VBHC) initiatives including Virtual Care, Telestroke and the 13 plus clinical cohorts included in the Leading Better Value Care suite of initiatives.

  • Professor Richard Osborne

    Professor Richard Osborne
    Distinguished Professor of Health Sciences; Director, Centre for Global Health and Equity, Swinburne University of Technology

    Richard is an epidemiologist and health services researcher. He holds a prestigious Australian NHMRC Principal Research Fellowship focusing on the global implementation of health literacy-informed interventions to reduce inequalities and assist countries to reach the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He was named as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in 2018 and 2021 (top 1% most influential researcher globally) with over 280 publications. He is an advisor to the WHO and he holds Honorary Professor positions at Copenhagen University, Denmark, and Thammasat University, Thailand.

    With Danish colleagues he developed the digital health literacy questionnaire (eHLQ), the Multidimensional Readiness and Enablement Index for Health Technology (READHY) Tool and the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ), which are among the most widely used health literacy tools in the world. The HLQ supports decision-making within clinical trials, it is used in National Health Surveys, multi-national evaluations and numerous quality improvement initiatives. It is applied in over 600 projects in over 60 countries.

    His team also introduced the Ophelia (Optimising Health Literacy and Access) Process – a systematic approach to co-designing, implementing and scaling equity focused interventions that are needed, wanted and implementable. Ophelia is the foundation of WHO National Health Literacy Demonstration projects that are now being implemented in many countries.

    Amber Jones

    Amber Jones is the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Occupational Therapy Burns and Trauma Team Leader. She has worked clinically within the Professor Stuart Pegg Adult Burn Centre since 2005 and is an invited member of the International Society for Burn Injuries Rehabilitation Committee. Amber completed a Graduate Certificate in Health Science (Health Services Innovation) in 2019. She is currently undertaking a PhD through The University of Queensland to develop and evaluate a telehealth model for the delivery of multidisciplinary burn care.

    Rural Health Innovation Lead, Western NSW Local Health District

    As Rural Health Innovation Lead with Western NSW LHD, Amelia leads the implementation of projects addressing rural medical workforce and operational challenges.

    Amelia is an experienced project management professional with a background in Regional and International Development, specialising in the public and not-for-profit sectors.

    She is passionate about out of the box approaches that drive development outcomes and public value.

    Amelia holds a Bachelor of International Studies (Hons) from the University of New South Wales, including having spent one year studying in France. She worked for an international not-for-profit organisation in Morocco – The High Atlas Foundation – and secured funding for USD $1 million+ in new human development initiatives and local programs. As Projects Manager for Regional Development Australia Central West, Amelia led engagement and project delivery across the agriculture and telecommunications sectors to drive economic development across the Central West region.

    Now based in Warren NSW, Amelia enjoys playing sport in her local community, dabbling in sheepwork in her spare time, and helping out on the farm that she lives on.

    Anna Barwick is a Lecturer in the School of Rural Medicine at the University of New England and is currently working on her PhD at the University of Queensland. Anna holds a Master of Clinical Pharmacy, is a practising pharmacist, diabetes educator, researcher, and pharmacist immuniser. Anna was the PSA 2021 NSW Pharmacist of the Year, 2021 Innovative Pharmacist of the Year and 2022 NSW Premier’s Woman of the Year. Anna’s research interests focus on women’s health, including medical termination of pregnancy, domestic and family violence support, gestational diabetes, and telehealth innovations.

    Dr Annie Banbury is a digital health researcher and consultant in academia and industry. Annie has a PhD in digital health and extensive experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating telehealth interventions across a range of health services and health care settings. She brings over 30 years of experience in health care. Beginning her career in public health she has worked in both Australia and the UK in a diverse portfolio of roles. She is a passionate advocate for co-designing and developing digital interventions and technology that meet the end user’s needs, whether health professionals or consumers.

    Anthony Smith

    Professor Anthony Smith is the Director of The University of Queensland’s Centre for Online Health (COH). He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Southern Denmark's Centre of Innovative Medical Technology, in Denmark; and the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare.  Anthony has more than 20 years of research experience involving the planning, implementation, and evaluation of telehealth services. Current projects include the integration of telehealth applications in primary care settings and Indigenous communities; the delivery of tele-rehabilitation services into primary schools; and discipline specific clinical telehealth services across Queensland.  He is the co-chair of the SFT-22 conference, and has had an instrumental role in leading the SFT conferences since they commenced in 2001.

    Ben is a medical scientist lead of SA Health’s iCCnet COVID Branch and has been responsible for the development of systems and distribution networks for in-home monitoring kits.

    Ben has a Bachelor of Medical Science with a specialisation in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Ben is a member of the Australasian Association for Clinical Biochemistry.

    Ben has previously worked as an external quality control scientist at RCPAQAP in the Serology, Immunology and Chemical Pathology disciplines. Ben has co-authored a range of articles including “Evaluating Commutability of EQA Samples for Epstein-Barr Virus VCA IgM Serology”, “A Snapshot of Foetal Fibronectin Testing Across Australisia” and “Stability of RCPAQAP Blood Gas and Co-oximetry Samples.”

    General Practitioner Carl J. Brandt, Ph.D. Carl J. Brandt is one of the pioneers in behavioural change through eHealth. In 2000 Carl co-founded the successful Internet site NetDoctor.co.uk followed by a number of other successful eHealth services including SlankeDoktor, SundhedsDoktor and Liva Healthcare in 2015. Liva Healthcare Ltd. has proven successful in the NHS National Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP). Carl is working as a GP and is employed part-time at the Research Unit for General Practice at the University of Southern Denmark as head of the Digital Health Research Group.

    Catherine has worked in healthcare in rural locations throughout New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia for more than 20 years. She is passionate about improving the health of people living in rural areas by improving equity of access to health services and spent the first 18 years of her career working as practising as a Dietitian. For the past couple of years she has worked in the Integrated Care space on projects which have had a strong telehealth focus. She has helped to facilitate the implementation of a Remote in Home Monitoring Service in Western New South Wales and has most recently been the Operations Lead for the Western NSW Covid Care in the Community Program.

Chrissie then worked as
    the Telehealth Clinical Nurse for Specialist Outpatients and is now Telehealth Coordinator for Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service.

    Dr Clare Burns is an Advanced Speech Pathologist and Clinician Research Fellow, Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital, Queensland and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at The University of Queensland, Australia (UQ). She has over 20 years of clinical experience and over the last 12 years has conducted research in speech pathology and technology enabled health care. She has developed, evaluated and implemented a range of telehealth services incorporating speech pathology (specifically swallowing and head and neck cancer services), multidisciplinary care, and broader allied health services.

    Dominique realised her passion for rural health care when completing undergrad nursing placements across NSW, whilst studying at UNE.

    After growing up in Sydney and then returning to complete her Graduate Nursing year at Sydney Children Hospital Randwick, Dominique decided relocate to Dubbo and use her tertiary experience to delivery care to paediatric patients at Dubbo Health Service.

    In 2019 Dominique returned to Armidale and completed her Postgraduate qualifications in Midwifery with CSU.

    In 2020 Dominique became the Paediatric Clinical Nurse Consultant across WNSWLHD. It was during Dominique’s time in this role that she became more passionate about the delivery of first class health care despite geographical location including the facilitation of care for chronically ill paediatric patients closer to home.

    As COVID reached WNSWLHD in 2021, Dominique became the Clinical lead for Covid Care in the Community. By far the most challenging role, Dominque is proud to have lead clinicians in caring for unwell patients across the LHD using virtual health care strategies.

    Donna Parkes is the Virtual Care Stream Manager at the Agency for Clinical Innovation. Donna has been a part of the system transformation of NSW Health working to support the integration of virtual care seamlessly into healthcare. With over 15 years in this space, the past 5  years leading the work at the ACI, Donna has been instrumental in developing major initiatives that have encouraged innovation, supported maturity in the system and she continues to work with a laser focus to elevate the clinician and consumer experience.

    Dr. Alan Taylor’s research and writing focusses on the sustainability of telehealth services including the role of standards, guidelines, socio-technical codes and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. He has twenty years of experience in the public and private sectors in Australia, Europe and Africa as a project manager, academic, ICT strategist, and architect.  He has led numerous telehealth and emergency services initiatives in Queensland and South Australia to improve access to health care using information and communications technologies.

    Dr Feby Savira is an Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Health Transformation, Deakin University. Her fellowship examines utilisation patterns and health system implications of the COVID-19-instigated expansion of telehelath services in the context of regional Australia. Dr Savira is also an investigator on other digital health evaluation programs, such as the Victorian government-funded Victorian Collaborative Healthcare Recovery Initiative examining virtually enabled care for older people. She obtained a PhD in 2021 from Monash University in preclinical research and health economics. Her thesis examined the preventable burden, novel pharmacotherapies and emerging preclinical therapeutic targets for the treatment of chronic disease.

    Genevieve is a speech pathologist and PhD candidate within the Queensland Aphasia Research Centre, The University of Queensland. Genevieve's research investigates the feasibility, usability and acceptability of delivering a Comprehensive, High-dose Aphasia Therapy program via telerehabilitation (TeleCHAT). She also has clinical experience working in a telepractice clinic. Genevieve is passionate about enabling equitable access to speech pathology services, especially for people with aphasia.

    Dr Helen Haydon is a Research Fellow, Registered Psychologist and Telehealth Consultant at the Centre for Online Health, Centre for Health Services Research, The University of Queensland. Helen’s work has a strong implementation and evaluation focus. Additionally, she brings expertise in qualitative methodology and questionnaire development. She aims to increase access to health services to underserved communities and improve clinician and consumer health literacy through the effective use of technology. Specifically, her research focusses on the intersection of digital health with First Nation’s health, palliative care and brain health (e.g. dementia care, neuro-oncology).

    Ivonne is a project manager and clinical systems analyst, focusing on implementing digital health solutions for Victorian hospital agencies. She has worked as a clinical pharmacist in the hospital and community settings. She joined the Digital Health division within the Department of Health Victoria 10 years ago and has a deep knowledge of configuring and maintaining digital health platforms across various Victorian agencies.

    Ivonne is currently leading a project to improve the Virtual Care in partnership with Healthdirect Australia. As a former clinician, she has a special interest in empowering patients to manage their own care in both acute and chronic settings using virtual care platforms and devices to allow clinicians to effectively monitor a patient in real-time. The virtual care allows the patient to seamlessly transition their care remotely from their home.

    Jane Kealey is a Telehealth Consultant based in Wangaratta, North East Victoria. She has over 8 years experience designing and implementing regional telehealth projects, which include the Hume Regional ED Telehealth Service, Hume Digital ECG Service, the Hume Telehealth Agency, Remote Cochlear Mapping service and Intensivist Telehealth Service. Of farming origin, Jane’s passion for telehealth is a culmination of past work experiences as a nurse and researcher in both rural and metropolitan locations, along with a drive to improve patient access to world class health services from anywhere in the country.

    John is an orthopaedic surgeon who cares for the peoples of North West Queensland via Telehealth fracture clinics, He is also the Clinical Director of the Queensland Audit of Surgical Mortality and its Northern Territory counterpart. He is an Associate Professor with the University of Queensland. He has worked for the peoples of Queensland for over fifty years through Queensland Health appointments. He teaches regularly on ‘non -technical skills’ and ‘safer surgical teamwork’ required by surgeons and their teams to deliver high quality, compassionate care to all communities and individuals. He has co-authored an online learning tool titled ‘Scalpel to Skin” looking at training in these areas for those seeking to progress to becoming surgeons.  He has been heavily involved in rural care delivery for almost fifteen years through telehealth and has researched and published on this subject with respect to evaluation of orthopaedic telehealth service delivery and rural and remote care access. Compassionate care for all patients remains his priority.

    Justin Zakis is the Lead Research Engineer at Sonova Audiological Care Australia, and Principal Investigator of the company’s Human Research Ethics Committee approval for research studies. He has over 25 years of R&D experience in academia and industry that has focused on improving outcomes for users of hearing aids and cochlear implants. This has included a range of topics, such as the design, implementation and validation of electronic circuits, digital signal processing algorithms, online hearing tests and the remote self-fitting of hearing devices by their users. His PhD showed that machine learning algorithms can be implemented in hearing aids, and used to automate the fine-tuning of amplification settings to the user’s preference during everyday use without needing to visit a clinic. He has mostly published in the high-ranking, peer-reviewed, scientific journals and conferences for hearing-aid research.

    Kathryn joined the COH in 2021, and primarily lends assistance in research dissemination and administration, in particular data collection, management and analysis. She has concurrently completed a Master of Public Health and a Master of Epidemiology with a major in Clinical Epidemiology at UQ, and has an interest in infectious disease.

    Prior to her work with the COH, Kathryn has also previously assisted in greenspace and atopic disease research at the School of Public Health in UQ, and was a statistician for the Global Substance Use and Mental Health (GSUMH) unit at the Centre for Health Services Research (CHSR).

    Dr Kelly Teagle is a GP in Canberra. She graduated in Medicine from UQld in 2001 and was a Medical Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force. As a civilian GP she gained Fellowship of the RACGP and developed her interest in women’s medicine with a Graduate Diploma of Women’s Health and further studies. Dr Teagle is the Founder and Principal Clinician of WellFemme Women’s Health Services.

    I have a clinical background in oral health therapy, and since completing my PhD in 2017 I have worked in higher education, research, and consultancy/policy roles. My research centres around access, equity and supportive care for medically compromised consumers and the connection of oral health and general health. This is underpinned by my passion and advocacy for compassionate, person centred care as core business in health.     Started in the Telehealth Coordinator, Metro North Hospital Health Service position in 2013 and enjoys the challenge of promoting, implementing and growing telehealth models of care to bring specialty services to patients, their families and clinicians who are challenged by distance to improve access of care and training opportunities closer to home.

    Telehealth is an everchanging environment and is kept challenged in her role by the constant progression in technology to enable patients to be seen in their homes independently.

    I’m a junior doctor currently working at Mount Isa hospital - graduated from Griffith University MD in 2020. I originally came from Japan as an international student during high school.  

    My goal is to volunteer in developing countries to provide fundamental medical support to under-privileged children and those who are less fortunate. This motivated me to complete my medical education in Australia in order to study medicine in English, so that I may communicate and collaborate effectively with colleagues in the future.
